Philip Sy Zisman
Founding Artistic Director
Philip graduated with concurrent degrees from Arizona State University, B.A. in Theatre: Acting Concentration and a B.S. in Business Management. His theatre training includes: Viewpoints and Suzuki training with Anne Bogart, Leon Ingulsrud, and the SITI Company. He has also trained in Lecoq-Based training with Ronlin Foreman, Alexander Technique with Joan Schirle, Grand Guignol and Melodrama with Michael Fields, Michael Chekhov with Stephanie Thompson, Acrobatics with Joe Krienke, Contact Improv with Laura Munoz, and Corporeal Mime and Mask Work with Bruce Marrs at Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theatre.
Over the past few years, Philip immersed himself into the world of performance art creating works that are specifically designed for gallery settings. His NYC works focused on using the actor and theatrics as a medium amongst traditional fine art mediums to create a living and experiential canvas for onlookers. His works premiered monthly at Icosahedron Gallery located in the West Chelsea Arts District in New York, NY. Credits include: Love.Let.Go. A Series of Simultaneous Sensory Performances, The Garden Series: Spring Remembrance or the Death of Winter, and CAUGHT. In the Act: The Spider's Release.
In 2012, Philip directed Beneath the Skin, Hybrid's New York City full length theatrical debut at The Moss Theatre at 440 Studios. Collaborating alongside artisic associate, Elina Zavala, Beneath the Skin used heigthened emotions, stylized movement, and visual projections to create a beautiful production of loss and finding one's identity through the universal language of the human body.
Philip has also worked for The Public Theater, New York Theatre Workshop, and currently works for the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation in arts administration. His most recent project is serving as the producer for Our Kiki: A Gay Farce premiering at the 2013 New York International Fringe Festival.
Also, in 2009, Philip attended the Hemispheric Institute in Bogota, Colombia to speak about his essay, "Beautification: The Creation of Women of Hybridity", about the transcultural element of his devised work, Beautification: The Transcultural Exploration of Women. His works have been featured at The Moss Theatre, Icosahedron Gallery, the Phoenix Little Theatre and The Chocolate Factory as part of the 2010 and 2009 Phoenix Fringe Festivals, Space 55, Prism Theatre Company, Madcap Theaters, and various venues around Arizona State University.
Directing credits include: Beneath the Skin, Isolated. A Retrospective Look into the Spectrum of Loneliness, Shame Photo: Past, Present, Progressive, Jean Paul Sartre's No Exit, Beautification: A Transcultural Exploration of the Oppression of Women, Crave by Sarah Kane, Fractured, Blood and Roses, and Chasing Glory.
Selected acting credits include: Mr. Smith in The Bald Soprano, Doctor/Judge/Priest in Machinal, Big Stone in Eurydice, The Officer in The Comedie of Errors, and more. He has performed at The 13th Street Rep (New York, NY), The Imperial Sand Dunes, Old Town Scottsdale, Roosevelt Row, Prism Theatre, ASU MainStage, Phoenix Little Theatre, SMOCA, Space 55, and the streets of Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theatre in Blue Lake, California.
Joanna Emmott
Executive Director/ Lighting Designer
Joanna graduated with her B.A in Theatre from Arizona State University. Joanna served as the Lighting Designer for Beneath th Skin, Isolated. A Retrospective Look into the Spectrum of Loneliness at the 2010 Phoenix Fringe, Jean Paul Sartre's No Exit, Beautification: A Transcultural Exploration of Women, and Crave by Sarah Kane all under the direction of Philip Zisman. Joanna also served as lighting designer and co-producer of Our Kiki: A Gay Farce, which premeired at the 2013 New York International Fringe Festival. She also served as the Assistant Lighting Designer for Eurydice and Don Coyote at Arizona State University. Joanna also served as the Lighting Designer for Tom's Children (Blue Roses, New York), AM:I, part of ASU's Festival of New Works, and for Omit presented at the 2010 Phoenix Fringe Festival.
Over the past few years, Joanna has focused on new works, often involving movement and innovative theatre productions with up and coming New York based companies. Some recent NYC credits include: The Mistakes Madeline Made & Gross Indecency (BASiC Theatre Project), Lets Do it Live & Bohemian Lights (Live Source Collective), Slut (NYU). She is also looking forward to working with BASiC again this fall for Brecht's Mother Courage.
Joanna has worked for various companies including: Blue Roses (New York, NY), Prism Theatre Company, Hybrid.[Theatre].Ensemble, Arizona State University MainStage, and New Carpa Theatre.
Her works have been seen at: Pregones, 440 Studios, NYU, The Abingdon Theatre (New York, NY), Prism Theatre, Phoenix Theatre, The Chocolate Factory, Lyceum Theatre (ASU), and various venues around New York City and Phoenix, Arizona.
Kelly Colburn
Media Designer
Kelly is a freelance multimedia designer and director. She has assisted designers Jared Mezzocchi, Dave Tennant, Kate Freer and Reid Farrington.
Her past assistant multimedia credits include Reid Farrington's A Christmas Carol, You Are Dead. You Are Here., Swell, and Nuclear Love Affair.
Lead Credits include: Beneath The Skin, Usher, #Coriolanus, Women Who Rock, Fear & Loathing: An Epitaph to the American Dream, Liebestod.
As a director, her post-collegiate work has included The Cherry Orchard (14th St. Y) and developing Kingfishers, a modern tale based on the myth Alcyone with her two closest collaborators, Lauren Ullrich and Vincent Graham and is one half of the new hit webseries 2 Girls 1 Asian - check them out on facebook and twitter.
Elina Zavala
Artistic Associate
Elina is an actor, dancer, and performance artist currently living in New York city. She graduated from Arizona State University, where she studied theatre and movement, and was recognized in innovative shows including Iphigenia Crash Land Falls on the Neon Shell That was Once her Heart, Orchids in the Moonlight, and Cotton Clouds, which she choreographed and co-directed.
She’s performed in many site specific, multi-media pieces with Chris Danowski’s Theatre in My Basement, and worked with New York performer and director, Jeff McMahon, on his original play Straight Talk. She was also invited to perform in the New York Fringe Festival with Progressive Theatre Workshop’s Shots; a Love Story.
Elina continues her training in New York in many ways, including suzuki, ballet, Flamenco dance, music production, and has studied with Scratch Academy, The SITI Company, the People's Improv Theater, and world re-knowned Flamenco dancer Dionisia Garcia. Her passion for movement and bold, visual theatre has led her to create new work and collaborate with visionary writers and artists; she performed in Hybrid’s last two projects Caught in the Act, and The Garden Series.
